There’s Always a Middle
©2009 Doug Spears

Well between two sides there’s always a middle,
Some give a lot, some take a little,
Really pretty simple, not a big riddle,
But we always make it so hard,
To see the other side of the puzzle,
Between here and there always looks like trouble,
Jumping in the water is a constant struggle,
If you won’t let down your guard.

Way back, it all goes way back,
Long as I can remember back,
            That’s how it’s always been,
It was a worn down track
Before Jill tumbled down after Jack,
Before David pulled a rock from a sack,
            Seems it never ends.

Now brown against yellow, black against white,
Strong against weak, wrong against right,
Everybody’s out there looking for a fight,
And nobody ever wins,
You might win a battle but you’ll lose the war,
‘Cause you can’t remember what you’re fighting for,
You think you have less and you’ve gotta have more,
So it starts all over again.

Way back, it all goes way back,
Long as I can remember back,
            That’s how it’s always been,
It was a worn down track
Before Jill tumbled down after Jack,
Before David pulled a rock from a sack,
            Seems it never ends.

Now a hand reaches out farther than a fist,
It’s a subtle point so often missed,
You never get nothing without a little risk,
And sometimes you’re gonna fail.
When you think you know it all there’s just no way out,
‘Cause being human is largely doubt,
Between going with and going without,
There’s a much better traveled trail.

Way back, it all goes way back,
Long as I can remember back,
            That’s how it’s always been,
It was a worn down track
Before Jill tumbled down after Jack,
Before David pulled a rock from a sack,
            Seems it never ends.

Well between two sides there’s always a middle . . .
